2016 Bike Week activities roll on

May 17, 2016

Bike Week 2016, May 14 – 20 continues to roll on with several events rounding out the week’s activities supported by the Washoe County Health District promoting increased physical activity, alternative transportation, and a clean environment. A list of events can be found at www.bikewashoe.org/bike-week/events.
The Washoe County Health District Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) Keep It Clean Rack ‘Em Up program and the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance (TMBA) encourage everyone to ride a bike to work or school, or just try cycling for fun, fitness and transportation. Events like the Commuter and the Mayoral Challenges; Ride for Reading; the Coffee Shop Stop; and, the Reno Bike Project Pancake Feed are fun, free and help keep our air clean and healthy.
Another popular event is the Rack ‘Em Up at School Contest.  Prizes will be awarded to the schools with the Best Decorated and Fullest Bike Racks during the week.  Judging will be based on photos sent to AQMD.  To register a school and submit photos, go to www.OurCleanAir.com.
An additional event, the 2016 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Spoker Ride, winds up the week with three rides starting at Caughlin Ranch on Saturday, May 21. Choose either a 50-mile, 25-mile or a family friendly 10-mile route. Riders draw playing cards at designated stops during the event and then play their best 5-card poker hand at the end for prizes. The Health District estimates that riders logged 8,503 mile, over four tons of carbon dioxide emissions were prevented, and 305 vehicles stayed off the road during last year’s Bike Week in Washoe County.
