Affordable Spay and Neuter Services for Qualifying Washoe County Residents

by | Jan 30, 2021

Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) received grant funding from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to assist with affordable spay and neuter services for Washoe County dogs and cats through March 31,2021.

WCRAS has partnered with the SPCA of Northern Nevada to provide this valuable service to Washoe County Residents. So far, this partnership has provided 225 surgeries for dogs and 158 surgeries for cats.

“Due to COVID impacts on our community, this affordable spay/neuter program is more critical than ever. Please help us spread the word so those who need help fixing their pets can get it.”Jill Vacchina Dobbs, executive director at the SPCA of Northern Nevada, said. “Spaying and neutering pets is important to help mitigate the high national rate of pet euthanasia, it prevents unwanted pregnancies, and it helps pets live longer, healthier lives.”

“The importance of collaborating together with the SPCA of Northern Nevada to provide these affordable and important spay and neuter services is underscored by negative economic impacts of the pandemic.  The cost for spay and neuter services is out of reach for many pet owners, yet it is extremely important in preventing unnecessary animal suffering and overpopulation in our region,” Shyanne Schull, director of Washoe County Regional Animal Services, said.

To qualify, you must be a Washoe County resident, receiving governmental assistance such as SNAP, disability or unemployment or you are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WCRAS staff, contract veterinarian and support staff will be on-site to assist with this program.  All pets must be current on vaccinations or they will receive vaccinations at the time of spay/neuter.
